SOUTH TYROL MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY
Since 1998 it has been home to Ötzi, the ice man, whose remains are exhibited together with the artefacts and clothes found on him in 1991 quite by accident near the Tisa pass in Val Senales. His discovery has triggered important research on his life period, about 5,300 years ago. As well as his habitat, the Museum documents Ötzi’s living environment, the history of the finds, the research, the “criminal case” regarding his death as well as curiosities about him. Each year there are different special exhibitions on archaeological topics from South Tyrol to supplement the permanent display.
MUSEUM OF NATURE SOUTH TYROL
The museum is a permanent exhibition of the biological,
zoological and geological development of the province
illustrated via reconstructions, multimedia and interactive
installations that offer an immediate rendition of
the main epochs and peculiarities of the area. Interesting
is the representation of the evolutionary process from
the ocean to the Dolomite mountain range, now a World
Starting on November 2011, the Municipal Museum of
Bolzano has opened to the public a part of its collections,
laid out in six halls at the first floor and in the tower.
The Municipal Museum of Bolzano was closed in 2003
for restoration works to the historical building that also
envisaged its expansion for the better display of its collections.
This albeit limited opening is only temporary and
therefore transitory. The layout has been designed to remind
visitors that it is only a first step towards returning
the whole museum to the city. The scientific rigour of the
event blends in well with the evocative nature of the various
works displayed. The exhibition includes about 200
works of art from the 8th to the 20th centuries, consisting
of stuccoes, detached frescoes, wooden statues and altars,
oil paintings, jewellery, stoves and
ceramic stove tiles, folkloristic costumes
and graphic arts.
Museion is the Museum of modern and contemporary
art of Bolzano, as well as an international research laboratory
created with the intent to connect temporary exhibitions
with its permanent collection. Quite interesting is
also its architectural structure, built abreast of the banks
of the Talvera river crossed over by two curve-shaped
bridges that converge onto the overall perspective and
connect the historical centre with the new city districts.
An open house: the Museion Passage
A passage, a square, a stage or an open space: the ground
floor of Museion is a place where people can meet and
become acquainted with contemporary art in Bolzano,
capable of hosting events, readings, wine tastings, book
presentations and many other things. Also thanks to the
support of the Bolzano municipality, this space is available,
free of charge, for cultural events organized by artists,
associations and private citizens.
